ten years of impact

Future Planet Capital is pleased to launch our 10-year Impact Report. Future Planet Capital is an impact-led VC that invests to address the world’s biggest challenges, profitably. Ten years ago, we started from a simple conviction: the world’s biggest challenges and its best investment opportunities are the same thing. A decade on, that conviction has grown into a platform overseeing $570m for public and private investors. We have backed more than 170 companies and delivered 57 profitable exits, building a portfolio that now employs over 9,500 people and holds more than 1,400 patents. Download the report today.

Our investment philosophy is impact-led, globally benchmarked and data-driven. We measure founders and science against the best anywhere, from Oxford, Cambridge, MIT and Stanford to UK government research facilities and regional ecosystems beyond the Golden Triangle. Dive into the report to see that approach at work across our Global, National and Regional strategies: the British Co-Investment Fund, UKI2S and the West Midlands Co-Investment Fund. You can also see how our Impact 100 framework has taken us from broad alignment with the UN SDGs to a sharper focus on the challenges that matter most.

The report also tells the stories behind the numbers, through first-hand accounts from the investors who backed Tokamak Energy, REGENT, Pragmatic Semiconductor, Juno and others, often before anyone else would. It closes with an honest look at why so much British science has created value elsewhere, and what UK pension capital could do to change that. Take a deeper look at the founders, the breakthroughs and the lessons from a decade of backing frontier science.

A note From the editor

A researcher who has spent a decade on a single protein, deciding whether to spin out a company. A business whose timing looked wrong for years, then exactly right. That is what backing iconoclastic founders looks like in practice.

Over ten years, FPC has backed more than 170 of them and seen 57 exit profitably. This report covers what the numbers leave out: the specific founders, the specific bets, and the moments where the thesis looked shaky and held anyway.

A note From the Chairman

Ten years ago, Future Planet Capital started from a simple conviction: the world’s biggest challenges and its best investment opportunities are the same thing.

A decade on, we have backed founders from the world’s leading research ecosystems, delivered 57 profitable exits and grown to oversee nearly $600m.

We have learnt that impact without rigour does not scale, and that the best returns and deepest impact sit together at the frontier of science.

The challenges ahead are bigger, and our task is to meet them at a scale that matches the problem.
